Join fellow invasive species managers, citizen scientists, researchers, gardeners, green industry professionals and more from British Columbia and Washington State at the day-long Invasive Species and Exotic Pest Workshop in Bellingham on Friday, March 29, 2019.
The Bellingham workshop is an extension of the annual regional, bi-state workshop in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (now in its eighth year). The purpose of this workshop is to increase awareness of key invasive species of concern in the region through presentations given by experts in their field. Increased awareness will lead to more early detections of and rapid responses to pest introductions. This workshop is made possible through Farm Bill funding and the collaboration of multiple partners: Washington Invasive Species Council, Washington State University Extension, and the Puget Sound Knotweed Forum.
Below is a sneak peek of a few of the topics to be covered:
Invasive Species Status: The British Columbia Inter-Ministry Invasive Species Working Group and the Washington Invasive Species Council will update attendees on the status of invasive species management in British Columbia and Washington State, respectively.
Pathways for Invasive Species: Clinton Campbell (USDA-APHIS) will explain how management helps address the invasive species problem as well as the various ways invasive species are introduced to new locations.
Decontamination: After learning how invasive species sneak in, Brianna Widner from the Washington Invasive Species Council will help attendees from becoming unwitting transporters of invasive species by sharing some tips on how and when to deploy different decontamination tactics.
Spotted Lanternfly: Sven-Erik Spichiger from the Washington State Department of Agriculture will share the facts about the impending threat of spotted lanternfly. Dr. Spichiger will describe from first-hand experience contending with Spotted Lanternfly in Pennsylvania the havoc these distinct insects can weak. Spotted lanternfly are not yet in Washington, which means we have the perfect opportunity to take preventative actions.
Knotweed impacts, treatment, and status in Puget Sound will be presented by Sayward Glise from the King County Noxious Weed Control Program. In addition, a Puget Sound Knotweed Forum networking session is scheduled during the catered lunch.
