The glamorous life of a noxious weed specialist! Tom uses a tried and true method to remove parrotfeather from this pond in Renton. It’s not pretty but it is satisfying! Parrotfeather is a type of milfoil introduced as a water plant that can completely fill in open water. The tops of the plants look like little horsetail plants growing out of the water, but underwater it looks a lot like regular milfoil. Way to go Tom! That spooky looking mound is what happens when silver lace vine gets loose. This hillside in West Seattle is carpeted with the vine, probably dumped near the top some number of years ago and creeping down and over everything else since then. We don’t have a lot of infestations of this plant in King County but the few we do have are impressive! The plant’s Latin name is listed either as Fallopia baldschuanica or Polygonum aubertii. It’s related to knotweed and looks a lot like knotweed crossed with bindweed. Scary mix! The flowers are pretty but the potential for impact is reason enough to avoid planting it, at least in our region. Japanese knotweed looking very ornamental and full of honey bees. A plant can have many faces depending on where it's growing. This species has many positive traits but sadly its negative impacts have overwhelmed its benefits most places it's been introduced outside of its native range. Found here behaving very well in a garden setting north of Montreal but back home in Washington state we usually see it spreading far beyond where it's planted, perhaps not as dominating as the hybrid bohemian knotweed but still quite a big problem especially on river banks. #japaneseknotweed #fallopiajaponica #polygonumcuspidatum #knotweed #japanesegardenplants #knotweedandcoltsfoot
