A new flush of shiny geranium is bursting out this fall, loving the rain and sun and mild temps. If it wasn’t invasive and spreading like wildfire in King County, I might enjoy its tenacity. This is on Juanita Drive in Kirkland where it was removed once already but is now germinating from the seed bank for round two. Look for new plants wherever it was growing this spring. Unusual find of jimsonweed, Datura stramonium, at Garfield Ledges Trailhead in the Middle Fork Snoqualmie, most likely brought in during the recent work done in the area since it’s never been found in the area before. The volunteer who spotted the plant also removed it as soon as he figured out what it was (probably originally native to Mexico, but has spread far and wide with help from people). Now that’s early detection and rapid response! The first time a new invasive plant shows up is the best time to control it. Photo and awesome EDRR by Mark Boyar. By the way, my research about this plant tells me it can have serious health impacts including death 💀, but that people have used it medicinally as well as recreationally as well. Piggyback weeds! The pretty white flowers of silver lace vine are draping over the large, yellowing leaves of Bohemian knotweed. Closely related and similar looking, silver lace vine is called either Polygonum aubertii or Fallopia baldschuanica, and Bohemian knotweed, a hybrid between Japanese and giant knotweed, is called either Polygonum x bohemicum or Fallopia x bohemica. We are sure knotweed is highly invasive, thus its noxious weed status in Washington state, but the jury is still out on silver lace vine, which is on the state monitor list while data is collected. If you know about populations of silver lace vine outside of planted areas, report it on eddmaps.org so we can learn more about where it’s showing up or contact us through the link in our bio. Bittersweet nightshade in striking autumn 🍂 colors with leaves turned purple and berries shiny red. This invasive European vine, Solanum dulcamara, should not be confused with deadly nightshade, Atropa belladonna, although both are European species. Bittersweet nightshade is toxic although not usually deadly, and very common in North America now, unlike deadly nightshade. Don’t let it take over along a creek side or wetland where it can crowd out native plants. And even though it’s not always deadly, it would be smart to remove it from areas where kids are likely to pick the berries.
