Behold the giant knotweed! Why giant you ask? Full grown this species of knotweed can be 16 to 17 feet tall with leaves up to 16 inches long! Even shorter stems stand out to me because of the floppy, oversized leaves and smaller flower clusters that are typically all female (seed producing) unlike the more common hybrid Bohemian knotweed with smaller leaves and taller flower clusters that rarely produce seeds. Giant knotweed is also Asian in origin but farther north than its cousin Japanese knotweed, and is named after Sakhalin Island in the Kuril Islands between Russia and Japan where it is native. Giant knotweed and Japanese knotweed were both introduced to Europe and hybridized resulting in Bohemian knotweed. Then all three types of knotweed were sent to North America during the 1900’s as prized ornamental plants. Sadly they all turned out to be really good at escaping their plantings and spreading with wild abandonment into natural areas, riverbanks and roadsides all over the Pacific Northwest. #giantknotweed #elephantear #polygonumsachalinense #fallopiasachalinensis #reynoutriasachalinensis

It’s go time for tansy ragwort pulling! Look for tall leafy plants with clusters of yellow-orange daisy type flowers. Flowers can form seeds after plants are pulled or cut so put them in garbage bags and throw them out with the trash. Too much to fit in your garbage? King County residents call us 206-477-9333 and we will mail you a free voucher for disposal at a transfer station. If that’s not an option, at least pile it up somewhere it can’t spread and won’t get eaten by horses 🐎 or cattle 🐄.
