Spring is when our attention turns to weeds. Plants are popping up everywhere and it’s hard to know if it’s a good thing or a disaster waiting to happen. If you enjoy learning and are curious about noxious weeds and invasive plants, you might be interested in one of the following classes happening in the next month or so.
Sunday, April 7, 11 am-12:30 pm, Free Garden Lecture – Noxious Weeds 101, New Redmond Community Center, 6505 176th Ave, Redmond Washington
This free garden lecture is in the new community center near Marymoor Park. It will focus on noxious and nuisance weeds that can show up in a garden or backyard. Control tips will be shared and weed samples will be on hand to help gardeners learn to identify the plants. No need to register. Monday, April 15, 6:30 pm-8:30pm, Noxious Weeds and Invasive Plants in King County, Renton Library, 100 Mill Ave S, Renton WA 98057
King County Noxious Weed Control Program is offering a free two hour workshop featuring the major problem plants impacting our area. Identification and control methods will be shared for these challenging plants. Live weed samples will be available to help you see what these plants look like “in the flesh”. This class is helpful for people who are trying to tackle invasive and noxious weeds on their own property or for their work. There will be 2 WSDA pesticide license recertification credits available. It is free and open to the public, but please register ahead so we know how many people to expect. Class Information and Registration
Wednesday, April 17, 10 am-11 am, Noxious Weeds of the Past Five Years, WEBINAR, Hosted by Washington Invasive Species Council (WISC)
Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board education specialist Wendy DesCamp will review the 15 species the State Noxious Weed Board has added to noxious weed list since 2014. Information will focus mainly on identification, and will also include where these plants have been found in Washington and some management recommendations. You’ll also learn about the classes of noxious weeds in Washington and what that means for each of these newer listings. Webinar information and Registration
May 1, 8 and 15, 8 am-4:00 pm, King County Noxious Weed Control Seminar, Kent, Kenmore and Preston sessions (see link below for locations)
There are three sessions of this all-day seminar to choose between. Presentation topics include weed list updates and new weed species to watch for, noxious weed identification and control, regulations that impact noxious weed control work, research updates on invasive weeds, pesticide use – how to reduce risks and stay safe, knotweed control retrospective, and optional knotweed injector training and loan-out. Presenters include IPM professionals, researchers and fellow noxious weed control practitioners. WSDA pesticide license recertification credits will be available.
