A Happy Earth Day 🌏 Welcome to Tom Erler, our fantastic new noxious weed specialist for east King County (Covington/Maple Valley/Black Diamond and the lovely countryside eastward). Check out what’s hanging out on the garlic mustard he found along the road by the Black Diamond Library. It’s a golden tortoise beetle, which I believe likes to eat bindweed. Garlic mustard in flower means it’s a good time to search for it and get serious about controlling it where you don’t want it (hint: that’s everywhere in King County, WA!). Identification tips: always white flowers with 4 petals clustered on top of stems, hairless leaves with scalloped or coarsely toothed edges, plant might smell garlicky, seed pods will be long and skinny, roots often curved or s-shaped. Tiny new policeman’s helmet (Himalayan balsam, Impatiens glandulifera) is starting to pop up. Amazingly it will grow to be as tall as a person, sometimes taller, all in the next month or two. If it wasn’t so invasive and dominating it might be an interesting plant to have. But don’t be fooled, it spreads quickly by seed especially along creeks and other damp places. Plus it’s a regulated noxious weed in King County WA so please report it if you see it so we can control it.
